Sheikh Kamal El Mekki narrates the story of a man who could not stop sinning. He went to Ibrahim Ibn Adham, one of the pious early Muslims, to see if he could give him advice to solve his problems.
The remedy proposed by Ibrahim Ibn Adham was to try and shame the man out of his sinning against Allah, and he did it in the form of 4 advices.
First he told him to continue his sin, but to stop eating from the food and taking from the drinks that Allah provided him. The man realised it did not make sense to sin against Allah while taking from his food and drink.
He continued in the same manner, by then asking the man to at least stop sinning in Allah’s lands, and he acknowledged that he couldn’t, since Allah owns all the lands.
Next, he asked the man that if he could not stop sinning based on the first 2 advices, then to at least sin where Allah could not see him. But of course the man knew there is nowhere to hide and sin, since Allah can see all things.
Finally, he told the man that if he insists on sinning, then to continue until the Angel of Death comes to take him, and then ask them to wait while he performs 2 rakats and he repents, and then if they go to throw him in the Hellfire after not being given more time, then do not allow them.
After this advice the man realised how futile it was for him to sin, and from that day forward he did not sin again. May we all take heed from this wonderful narration, and apply the lessons learned to our own lives, and stop sinning against Allah today.
