The Consequences of the Lack of Islamic Law

Another gruesome chapter in the history of Pakistan was written on Tuesday, when a pregnant lady was stoned to death for marrying a man of her choice,  and the murder was committed by her own father, brother and ex-fiance.

Farzana Parveen, 25, was on her way to the Lahore courthouse when her brother first shot at her, and having missed, attacked her with a brick, which laid her low.  The others jumped in and beat her to death. Her father pathetically announced he did not regret stoning his daughter to death, because she was a disgrace to the family, by marrying a man of her choice, rather than her cousin as decided by her family.

Back in 2012, Anusha, a 15 year old Pakistani girl was also subjugated to the same ‘honour killing’ tag and brutally murdered by her parents. The reports revealed that Anusha died suffering from severe injuries that were left after her parents threw acid on her face for intentionally turning to look at boys.

“Does anybody remember that story of the revert committing an honour killing?”

Before Islam is put under harsh criticism it is again necessary for everyone to recall the times when a honour killing was done by a practicing Muslim.  Though Pakistan is a country with a majority of Muslims, like most of the Muslim countries today, it is a standing example for the substitution of Islam with traditional cultures and secularism.

The horrifying practice of killing daughters and sisters is prevalent in South Asia and most of Middle East, which is a tribal law that existed even before the advent of Islam. It is a result of male dominance, where female advancement and independence is feared and abhorred and is evidently related to illiteracy. This is a problem not only in Pakistan but in most countries with a feudal legacy.

When the Muslim world was under the rule of one entity abiding by the Islamic law, such problems were iradicated as the law is one and nothing in it changes, but considering the secularist Pakistan; the secular and tribal laws compete with Islamic rulings and such injustices persist.

The two contrary system of rulings, tribal non-Islamic ruling and secular non-Islamic ruling, share the common grounds of non-Islamic ruling where human laws and rules change according to dominance (tribe, nation, gender, parties etc), hedonism and short-termed needs. Islamic ruling is from the Creator who knows mankind better than we do ourselves and knows best about our necessities until the final day of our existence. This law undergoes no change according to any individual’s aspirations. Discarding of tribal and secular laws and returning to Islamic rule is the only way to see real progress.

In Islam it is the duty of every Muslim to seek knowledge and gain an education, but sadly in some Muslims countries they do not want their women to get educated! This is obviously a cultural sentiment found among ignorant Muslims and has nothing to do with Islam. Women at the time of  the final Prophet were allowed to ride camels (mode of transport at that time) but Saudi Arabia prohibits women driving, this is again secular Arabic law not Islamic ruling.

These grotesque incidents are an outcome of the lack of Islamic law, mostly made by power hungry men who fear loss of status if a Caliphate is established, and those who fear loss of wealth if real Shariah is established, where they will end up spending so much of their wealth in Zakat and all unislamic activity will be ceased. Forced marriages, mutilations, honour killings, denial of education for women etc happening in villages are all violations of Islamic laws and are twisted tribal practices and what happens in cities is secularism, both of which are alien to Islam.

Islamophobes exploit these incidents to enforce more secularism, and they use this as a weapon to incite hate against Muslims and cast Shariah Law in a wicked, satanic light. Many non-Muslim preachers even go as far as to call Islam an evil Satanic religion. This situation can only be rectified by nations embracing Shariah law fully, without the pick and choose Shariah we see in Saudi Arabia, UAE and other Middle Eastern countries.

Anti Islamic activities conducted by Muslims have to be curbed by incessant Dawah by every learned Muslim. We can no longer leave it to the politicians and rulers of these countries to set things right, they don’t care, being too busy enjoying their ill-gotten wealth. It is the duty of the common man to dig himself out of the pit of ignorance towards the light and beauty of Islam taught by our Prophet Muhammad PBUH. We will only go astray if we try to bend Islam to suit our whims and fancies as some deviant scholars in the West are doing today.
