Smoking – The Death Machine Claiming 6 Million Lives a Year

Worldwide smoking and tobacco use cause more than 6 million deaths per year (This figure includes over five million smokers & nearly a million non-smokers exposed to second-hand passive smoke.)

Smoking causes cancer in the liver, lung, blood, bladder, rectum, stomach, throat, tongue, heart disease, strokes, still births, infertility, rheumatoid arthritis and many other diseases. And is one of the main factors for the booming mult million dollar cancer industry.

In the 20th century 100 million people were killed by tobacco – as many as 1 billion are expected to die in the 21st century.

Saddam Hussain invaded Kuwait without a single life being lost yet the USA went nuts and was all out for war. They claimed Saddam had WMD (weapons of mass destruction) that could wipe out America, and used it as a pretext for invading Iraq. While one of the greatest WMDs is sold legally worldwide, with no objections from any superpower. Ironically more people have died due to smoking than all the nuclear disasters combined.

According to CDC (Center for Disease Control) in the USA (http://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/data_statistics/fact_sheets/health_effects/effects_cig_smoking/)

Smoking causes more deaths each year than all of these combined:

  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
  • Illegal drug use
  • Alcohol use
  • Motor vehicle injuries

More than 10 times as many as US citizens have died prematurely from cigarette smoking than have died in all the wars fought by the United States during its history.

On September 11 2001, over 4000 people were killed due to a heinous crime and as a result USA attacked Afghanistan, calling it the War on Terror.  Yet we don’t see America launching a War on Smoking in spite of the 480,000 death toll every year in the US alone. Governments around the world simply will not declare war against the tobacco companies!

Ever wonder why governments and bodies such as UN have never bothered to ban smoking even after so many have died? Do these organizations not see a reason to ban Smoking?  Why are Governments not ready to Ban Smoking? It could simply be because :-

  • Revenues from direct global tobacco sales are estimated to be over $500 Billion
  • The medical industry involved in treatments for cancer is worth $100 billion

Britain’s role as a hub of the multinational tobacco trade is in part a legacy of the British Empire. While BAT (British American Tobacco) sells very few cigarettes in the UK, it is a big player in many emerging economies. In Turkey it sells Viceroy and Pall Mall brands; its Kent cigarettes are big sellers in Russia, while Gold Flake and John Player Gold Leaf are popular in Pakistan. Rothmans in Nigeria and Kent and Montana in Iran are also important for BAT. India, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Iraq, Egypt and Yemen are also promising markets for the company.

It is interesting to note that some of the above mentioned countries had great turmoil and civil unrest yet the business for cigarettes is flourishing, several researchers have identified that people who experience stress have a greater tendency to smoke which would prompt some conspiracy theories to claim these turmoil’s may have been promoted by Tobacco giants such as BAT.

I strongly believe that the common man can help to avert the killings of 6 Million people every year by quitting cigarettes and encouraging those who smoke to quit smoking, I have personally experienced that if you show that you dislike smoking your friends would stay away from smoking in your presence, if everyone made an effort to save this world and avert the disaster that is created by smoking we could all help save those who die from Cancer and Heart Disease.

Do not wait for tomorrow,  Act now!! Quit Smoking and demand that your friends quit too. Anyone who does not heed your call may not deserve to be your friend! Remember 6 million people are dying each year and the numbers are increasing!
